Amanda's Story
In August 2009 I was house/dog sitting for my aunt. While watching TV, I was thinking about a recent failed dating experience when a match.com commercial came on. Since nights out on the town clearly weren't producing quality men and being a teacher wasn't a great profession for meeting any, I figured it wouldn't hurt to look. If you know anything about my impulsive nature, you won't be surprised to know that it took about an hour of looking to decide to just join.
I spent the next day sitting in my aunt's house sifting through profiles and chatting with a few. There was this one guy that I kept my eye on but wasn't responding to my message. After about a week, I finally heard back from him. Right away we discovered our biggest (and most annoying) difference...he was a Michigan fan. Despite such a glaringly negative quality ;), I decided to go out with him anyways.
Before I knew it, Saturday, August 29th, 2009 came around and here I was getting ready to head to Bar Louie to meet this Vernon guy. Not being a fan of first dates, I'm sure I nervously called Lindsay on the way there to get a pep talk. I called him when I pulled in the parking lot and he was already there. When I walked into Bar Louie and saw him I had the initial sigh of relief. He was cute! We sat at a table and ordered drinks (a Vodka Tonic and Rusty Nail to be exact). My first thought was that a Rusty Nail seemed like a high maintenance drink, granted I didn't know what it was, the name sounded like it. I didn't hold the drink against him though because we talked the whole time (surprise, surprise!). There was never an awkward moment of silence or lapse in conversation. In retrospect, it was not surprising that he saw students walking by while we were there.
After a while, Vernon suggested we go to The Dirty Martini to continue the night. I figured it was a good sign that neither of us were ready for the night to end. We headed there and stayed for a while. He didn't waste any time spinning me around and showing off his smooth moves. When we left, he walked me to my car and I decided to plant one on him. My plan worked; I got a text later that night that said, "I always fall for girls who kiss me first."
When I got home, I remember telling my mom that I never met anybody who talks as much as I do. We went on a few more dates that week and after only 2 months, Vernon dropped the L-bomb and we were "official".

Vernon's Version
On August 29, 2009 I decided to go on a first date with this new girl. After talking to her on the phone a few times we made a plan to meet at Bar Louie in Novi. Unlike usual, I was the first to show up knowing that being late would make a bad first impression. Amanda walked in while I was waiting at the door and I thought to myself she is taller than I thought. So we found a table and ordered drinks. She ordered a vodka tonic while I ordered an old man drink, rusty nail. The night started with non-stop conversation about our backgrounds, colleges and teaching. Not wanting the night to end early I asked Amanda if she would like to go to a night club and continue the night. At the end of the night I walked Amanda to her car and unknown to me, this would be my last First Date.
Our second date was when the sparks flew. We had Thai food and went to see The Final Destination 3D. Amanda tells me that I won her heart with my 3D glasses and drinking my beer through a straw.
Our story is pretty scheduled from there enjoying Date Night every Sunday and having the same breaks off of work because we are both teachers.
Since we started dating back in 2009 we have seen many friends and family get married and had more moments of love than we could count. We have traveled together, such as our first trip together for Ty and Dawnell’s wedding, to a Smokey Mountain vacation with all of the Hamilton’s. We enjoy sports (not teams) together, going to football games and watching basketball at local watering holes. We also have an unmatched bond with our addiction to shoes.
Amanda has always been very supportive of me coaching at Southfield and playing Indoor football for the ThunderHawks and Sting. She has purchased Southfield Blue Jay gear, made signs supporting #55 and even her buying me many University of Michigan gifts for birthdays and Christmases.
Amanda has always fit in with my family and friends. Many first meetings had her nervous but she easily adjusted and everyone fell in love with her as soon as they met her. It didn’t take long for invitations to go from saying Vernon & guest to Vernon & Amanda.
In the end I found the woman that loves me, forgives me, supports me, and luckily wants to spend the rest of her life with me.
